THE AFTERNOON SESSIONS

The Dynamic Power Of Yoga Philosophy In Life & Practice

Many people think that philosophy is an area of study reserved for academics and intellectuals. Additionally, many people think that philosophy is primarily a mental activity and is theoretical in nature and not designed to be actively applied to one’s daily activities and life. Yoga philosophy is very different in both these regards. Yoga philosophy was designed to be intimately practical, easy to understand and a very powerful way to enhance one’s day to day life.

In this discussion, we will draw from classic yoga texts such as the Bhagavad Gita and the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali to illustrate just how simple and how directly powerful the understanding of yoga philosophy can be. There is no reason to be fearful or intimated by the study of yoga philosophy. What you will learn about yoga philosophy in this session will change your ideas about yoga philosophy and about how it can change your life for many years to come.

GOVINDA KAI
At the age of 19, Govinda encountered a very powerful, spiritual man at an ashram. Introduced by one of his teachers, Govinda met Swami Muktananda, the guru and leader of the Siddha Yoga movement and whose ashram Govinda was visiting. The experience in meeting this man was very powerful and life changing. Never again would there be any doubt to the power of yoga. Govinda felt his heart, mind, body and spirit touched in a way that was deeply real.

In the early 90ʼs Govinda discovered the practice of Ashtanga Yoga. This particular style of yoga practice immediately took root in Govindaʼs heart. Ashtanga Yoga had an intensity and vitality that stirred deep feelings of passion and inspiration. He met and studied with a few influential teachers, including Tim Miller, Richard Freeman, John Smith, Eddie Modestini and Nicki Doane. All of these strong and wonderful teachers encouraged Govinda to travel to Mysore, India and practice with the guru of Ashtanga Yoga, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois.

In 1995, Govinda made his first trip to Mysore, India to study with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. His first trip lasted about three months and was one of the most powerful experiences in Govindaʼs life.

Nancy Gilgoff is one of the pioneers of Ashtanga Yoga and the first western women introduced to Ashtanga Yoga. She began practicing Ashtanga Yoga over thirty years ago with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India. As result of their long and close association, Nancy is able to teach with a style and touch that comes directly from Pattabhi Jois. When Nancy asked Jois how she should teach, he told her to „teach the way I taught you“ – advice which she took to heart and continues to follow today. Her home is on the Hawaiian island of Maui, where she founded „The House of Yoga and Zen” twenty years ago and where she continues to teach to this day.

Nancy’s studies, over the years, have also led her to other teachers, including Baba Hari Das and for asana, instructors of Iyengar. In addition, she has and continues to pursue the dharma teachings of the Dalai Lama.

Nancy spends much of her time touring the United States, Europe and Asia, teaching with a view to fostering loving-kindness and to share her love and experience of yoga.
